‘Destroy Marriages’ Bill goes ahead

Reading Time: 1 minute

After hopes that it would be dropped, the ‘quickie’ divorce Bill resurfaced in the Queen’s Speech – which was backed by MPs yesterday. The Bill would reduce the likelihood of reconciliation and make it easier for spouses to walk out with a divorce, for no reason, in just six months. The new law, which applies to England and Wales, would also remove the right of a spouse to contest a divorce. A cheating spouse is given all the advantages.

If people want a “light” form of divorce, they can go for Civil Union. The government is already considering allowing a couple to down-grade from marriage to civil union if they want. Marriage should be strengthened, not weakened into pointlessness. Someone to whom fidelity and everlasting care has been promised should be protected from a partner going wayward, not made to suffer without no recourse.
